Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
