Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these drugs need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
