The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
