Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Missing key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal straight entry to the last 16, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion offered a chance for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
