Around 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered many other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police state initial examinations show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the community for details.
An important official stated the attack made him without words and required to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
